MORINGA OLEIFERA – DRUMSTICK TREE PLANT

Moringa oleifera, also known as the drumstick tree or the “miracle tree”, is native to India and widely cultivated in Asia, Africa and South America. These full sun loving trees are easy to grow and perform their best outdoors in USDA growing zones 9-11. Portland OR falls in USDA hardiness zone of 8b or 9a.

Moringa tree is a highly valued tree because it is packed with 90+ vitamins, minerals, vital proteins and amino acids, antioxidants, and omega oils. Its leaves, pods, seeds and even its root are edible and have been used for centuries in ayurvedic medicines for its health benefits such as its anti-fungal, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps combat infant malnutrition and supports healthy and increased lactation for nursing mothers. It helps in maintaining a healthy blood sugar level for diabetics and much more.

Instead of the expensive bottles of multivitamins and supplements, you can grow this tree in your backyard for quick and easy access to the leaves for snacks, dishes, curries or just salads for nourishment. Simply sautéing the leaves lightly with salt and pepper is a delicious snack or boiling it with lentils or curries, or salads is very beneficial to your immune system.

An important note: For your convenience, these plants are in 6” pots so they could be easily taken indoors during the colder months (NW weather is not entirely favorable for Moringa) as it is advisable not to disturb the root for 1 year for a stronger and more prolific growth in the following years. After 1 year, you can repot it in a bigger container.
